When do children need a specialist?
Most childhood illnesses such as colds and mild fever can be managed by a pediatrician. A child specialist becomes important when symptoms keep coming back, do not respond to treatment, or affect growth, breathing, feeding, learning or behaviour. Knowing what to expect at each age helps you seek the right help at the right time.
Care at every age
Newborns (0 to 28 days)
Feeding, jaundice, weight gain, breathing and temperature are the main concerns. Premature and low-birth-weight babies need closer follow-up. See newborn and neonatal care and our guide to premature baby care.
Infants (1 month to 1 year)
Vaccination, growth, breastfeeding, starting solids (when and how to start solid food) and infections dominate. Regular weight and length checks show whether your baby is thriving.
Toddlers and preschoolers (1 to 5 years)
Frequent infections, allergy, picky eating, speech and behaviour concerns are common. If your child is late to speak, read when to worry about speech delay.
School-age children and teenagers
Asthma, allergies, obesity, sleep problems, screen-time effects and learning difficulties may need attention, along with growth and puberty checks.
Specialty concerns we help evaluate
- Breathing problems and asthma (respiratory care)
- Recurrent vomiting, diarrhoea and constipation (gastroenterology)
- Seizures and headaches (neurology)
- Growth, thyroid and diabetes (endocrinology)
- Development and behaviour (developmental pediatrics)
- Heart, kidney and surgical concerns, with referral for advanced care when needed
How Sparsh approaches child care
At the Pediatrics & Child Care department, Dr. Pankaj Kumar (MD Pediatrics, KGMU) and the team focus on treating the child, not just the illness: listening to parents, explaining the diagnosis simply and reviewing growth, nutrition and vaccination at every visit.
When to go straight to the emergency
Come immediately for difficulty in breathing, a seizure, bluish lips, unusual drowsiness, signs of dehydration, a serious injury or a very high fever in a young infant.
