About Pediatric Cardiology

A child’s heart can be affected by problems present from birth or by illnesses that develop later. Many heart murmurs in children are harmless, but some point to a heart condition that needs treatment. Early assessment gives parents clarity and ensures timely care.

What pediatric cardiology covers

  • Evaluation of heart murmurs
  • Screening and diagnosis of congenital heart disease
  • Blue baby or breathlessness during feeding in infants
  • Chest pain, fainting or palpitations in older children
  • Rheumatic fever and its heart complications
  • High blood pressure in children
  • Follow-up of children after heart surgery or procedures

How the heart is evaluated

The pediatrician examines the child and listens to the heart, checks pulses, blood pressure and oxygen saturation. Tests such as an ECG, chest X-ray and echocardiography (an ultrasound of the heart) may be advised. Where advanced surgery or catheter-based treatment is needed, our team helps coordinate care with an appropriate cardiac centre and stays involved in follow-up.

Signs parents should not ignore

  • Fast breathing, sweating or tiring while feeding
  • Poor weight gain
  • Bluish colour of lips or nails
  • Frequent chest infections
  • Fainting, chest pain or racing heart during activity
  • Swollen feet or puffiness in the face

Preparing for the visit

Bring birth records, previous reports and any earlier echocardiography results. Keep the child calm and fed, because a quiet child makes examination and echo scans easier.
