About Menstrual & Hormonal Disorders

Menstrual cycles are a sign of overall health, and changes in flow, timing or pain deserve attention. Hormonal disorders can affect periods, skin, weight, mood and fertility. Many of these problems are treatable, and early diagnosis prevents complications.

Conditions we evaluate

  • Irregular, delayed or absent periods
  • Heavy menstrual bleeding and prolonged periods
  • Painful periods (dysmenorrhoea)
  • Polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS)
  • Thyroid problems and high prolactin levels affecting cycles
  • Premenstrual symptoms (PMS)
  • Excess hair growth, acne and weight gain related to hormones
  • Bleeding between periods or after intercourse

How we diagnose

The doctor asks about your cycle pattern, flow, pain, weight change and family history. Examination, blood tests for hormones, thyroid and haemoglobin levels, and pelvic ultrasound help find the cause. In selected cases, further tests or a tissue sample from the uterus may be advised.

Treatment options

Care is individualised and may include:

  • Lifestyle changes such as balanced diet, physical activity and weight management
  • Hormonal medicines to regulate cycles or reduce heavy bleeding
  • Medicines for pain relief and iron supplements for anaemia
  • Treatment for thyroid or other underlying conditions
  • Ovulation induction for women who wish to conceive
  • Minimally invasive procedures when required

When to see a gynaecologist

Consult your doctor if you have periods that are very heavy or last more than seven days, cycles shorter than 21 or longer than 35 days, no periods for three months, severe pain that stops daily activities, or if you are trying to conceive with irregular cycles.
