About Genetic Testing (PGT)
Preimplantation genetic testing (PGT) is an optional laboratory test done on a few cells taken from an embryo created through IVF. It helps identify certain chromosomal or genetic conditions before an embryo is transferred. PGT is not needed for every IVF patient and should be chosen only after proper genetic counselling.
Types of PGT
- PGT-A (aneuploidy screening): checks whether an embryo has the normal number of chromosomes.
- PGT-M (monogenic conditions): looks for a specific inherited disease that runs in the family, such as thalassaemia.
- PGT-SR (structural rearrangements): used when a parent carries a chromosomal rearrangement.
Who may consider PGT
- Couples with a known inherited genetic disease
- Parents who carry a chromosomal rearrangement
- Women with repeated pregnancy loss or repeated IVF failure, when advised by the doctor
- Women of advanced age, selected after discussion of benefits and limits
How it works
Embryos are grown to the blastocyst stage and a small sample of cells is taken from the outer layer that forms the placenta. The sample is sent for testing, and embryos are usually frozen while results are awaited. A suitable embryo is then transferred in a later frozen embryo transfer cycle.
Important points
PGT reduces but does not completely remove the chance of a genetic problem, so prenatal screening may still be recommended in pregnancy. Some embryos may give unclear results, and the test cannot guarantee a pregnancy. Selecting the sex of the baby is prohibited by Indian law and is never offered.
