About Family Planning & Contraception

Choosing when to have a child, and how many, is a personal decision. Family planning services help couples decide and give safe, effective methods to prevent or space pregnancies. Our counselling is confidential and respectful, and includes both partners when possible.

Methods we discuss

  • Barrier methods: condoms for pregnancy prevention and protection from infections
  • Oral contraceptive pills: daily or extended-cycle pills
  • Intrauterine devices (IUD): copper or hormonal devices that work for several years
  • Injectables and implants: longer-acting hormonal options
  • Emergency contraception: for use after unprotected intercourse, as early as possible
  • Permanent methods: tubal ligation for women and vasectomy for men
  • Natural methods and fertility awareness: for couples who prefer non-hormonal choices

How to choose the right method

The right method depends on age, health conditions, whether you have completed your family, breastfeeding status, lifestyle, and how soon you may want to conceive again. Your doctor reviews your medical history, blood pressure and other factors, explains how each option works, its benefits and side effects, and helps you choose comfortably.

After starting a method

Follow-up visits ensure that the method suits you and that side effects, such as changes in bleeding pattern, are addressed. IUDs and implants can be removed at any time when you wish to conceive, and fertility generally returns quickly after most methods.

Special situations

We also guide women after childbirth or abortion, those with medical conditions such as hypertension or diabetes, and adolescents who need confidential advice.
