About Pediatric Surgery

Surgery in children needs special planning, because a child’s body, anaesthesia needs and emotional needs differ from an adult’s. Pediatric surgical care combines careful evaluation, safe anaesthesia and child-friendly recovery so that children heal well and families feel supported.

Conditions commonly evaluated

  • Inguinal and umbilical hernia
  • Undescended testis and hydrocele
  • Appendicitis and other causes of acute abdomen
  • Phimosis and circumcision needs
  • Tongue-tie and other minor procedures
  • Congenital abnormalities in newborns, such as anorectal or abdominal wall defects
  • Swellings, cysts and lumps
  • Foreign body ingestion and injuries

Care pathway

A pediatric surgeon examines the child and, when needed, advises tests such as ultrasound or blood investigations. The team explains whether surgery is needed, the best timing and the risks and benefits. Before the procedure, anaesthesia assessment and fasting instructions are given. After surgery, pain relief, wound care and feeding plans are explained, and follow-up ensures healing. Complex surgeries are planned with the neonatology and anaesthesia teams, and referral is arranged where highly specialised facilities are needed.

Preparing your child

  • Explain the visit in simple, reassuring words for older children
  • Follow fasting instructions strictly
  • Bring the favourite toy or blanket
  • Inform the team about allergies, previous surgeries and current medicines

When to seek urgent care

Seek immediate care for severe belly pain with vomiting, a hard or painful swelling in the groin, a swelling that cannot be pushed back, bilious (green) vomiting, or a child who is unusually drowsy after an injury.
