IVF & Fertility
What is IVF?
IVF (In Vitro Fertilization) is a fertility treatment in which an egg and sperm are combined outside the body in a lab to create an embryo. The healthy embryo is then transferred into the woman's uterus so that pregnancy can occur.
For whom is IVF the right option?
Couples who are having difficulty conceiving naturally — due to reasons such as blocked tubes, low sperm count, ovulation problems, endometriosis, unexplained infertility, or reduced fertility with age — may find IVF to be an effective option.
How long does the IVF process take?
A complete IVF cycle usually takes about 4 to 6 weeks. It includes steps such as ovarian stimulation, egg retrieval, fertilization, embryo culture and embryo transfer.
What is the success rate of IVF?
Success rates depend on several factors — such as the woman's age, the quality of the eggs and sperm, the health of the uterus, and the clinic's experience. Success rates are generally higher in women under 35 and tend to decrease with age.
Is the IVF process painful?
There may be mild discomfort from the injections and during egg retrieval, but egg retrieval is usually done under light anaesthesia so significant pain is not felt. Some women may experience mild bloating or cramping, which is normal.
How much does IVF treatment cost?
The cost of IVF can vary depending on the clinic, city, medicines and tests required. For accurate information, it is best to consult directly with the fertility clinic concerned.
Is success achieved in a single cycle?
Not always. Sometimes the first cycle is not successful, and some couples may need more than one cycle. The doctor suggests the next plan based on the results after each cycle.
What role does age play in IVF?
A woman's age directly affects the success of IVF, because both the number and quality of eggs decrease with age. This is why doctors often advise not to delay fertility treatment.
Does IVF increase the chances of having twins?
If more than one embryo is transferred, the chances of twins or more can increase. Nowadays, most doctors recommend single embryo transfer (SET) to keep the risk lower.
What should be kept in mind before starting IVF?

Choose an experienced and certified fertility clinic

Share your complete medical history with the doctor

Get the necessary tests done (hormonal, ultrasound, etc.)

Be mentally and emotionally prepared, as the process takes time and patience

Discuss costs and the number of cycles openly with your doctor

When should we consult a fertility specialist?
If you have not conceived after 12 months of regular unprotected intercourse (6 months if the woman is 35 or older), or earlier if you have irregular periods, PCOS, endometriosis, low sperm count or repeated pregnancy loss.
What happens at the first fertility consultation?
The doctor takes a detailed history from both partners, examines the patient and advises the tests needed, such as hormone tests, ultrasound and semen analysis. You then receive an explanation of the likely causes and the treatment options.
Can treatment outcomes be guaranteed?
No. Results depend on age, the cause of infertility and many other factors, so no responsible clinic can promise a particular outcome. Your doctor will explain realistic expectations for your situation.
