Fever is a sign, not a disease
Fever means the body is fighting something, usually an infection. Most childhood fevers come from viral infections such as colds and settle with rest and fluids. Fever itself is usually not harmful; what matters is the child's age, how they look and act, and how long the fever lasts. Read our Hindi guide on what to do when a child has fever.
Common causes of fever
- Viral fevers, colds and throat infections
- Ear infections and tonsillitis
- Urinary tract infection
- Gastroenteritis (loose motions and vomiting)
- Pneumonia and other chest infections
- Seasonal infections such as dengue, malaria and typhoid, which need testing
Safe care at home
- Give plenty of fluids and continue breastfeeding or normal feeds
- Dress the child lightly and keep the room comfortable
- Give a fever medicine in the dose advised by your doctor for your child's weight; do not give aspirin
- Do not use cold water or alcohol sponging
- Let the child rest and watch how they behave when the fever comes down
Take your child to a doctor if
- The baby is under 3 months old and has any fever
- Fever lasts more than 2 to 3 days, or goes very high
- The child is unusually sleepy, irritable or refuses to feed
- There is vomiting, loose motions or signs of dehydration
- There is a rash, ear pain, burning urination or cough with fast breathing
- Your child has a chronic condition, or you are worried
Go to the emergency immediately if
Your child has difficulty in breathing, a seizure, stiff neck, bluish lips, cold and pale skin, severe drowsiness or cannot be woken easily.
