What does a fertility specialist do?
A fertility specialist is a doctor who evaluates why a couple has not conceived and treats the causes. This can involve the woman's ovulation, tubes and uterus, the man's sperm, or both. Treatment ranges from simple advice and medicines to IUI, IVF and surgery. Seeing a specialist early gives you a clear picture instead of months of uncertainty.
When should you see a fertility specialist?
- You have tried for 12 months without pregnancy (6 months if the woman is 35 or older)
- Periods are very irregular, absent or very painful
- You have PCOS, endometriosis, fibroids or a history of pelvic infection
- The male partner has had a low sperm count or a semen problem
- You have had two or more miscarriages
- You wish to freeze eggs or sperm before cancer treatment or for later
Tests you may be advised
Only the tests relevant to you are recommended. For women these may include AMH and other hormone tests, thyroid and prolactin, pelvic ultrasound with follicle count and, when needed, a tubal patency test. For men, a semen analysis is the first test, followed by hormone tests or further evaluation if the result is abnormal. Read more on our fertility testing and diagnosis page.
Treatment options after diagnosis
- Lifestyle and medical management: weight, thyroid and blood sugar control, and treatment of infections.
- Ovulation induction and timed intercourse for women who do not ovulate regularly.
- IUI: washed sperm placed in the uterus at the time of ovulation (read about IUI).
- IVF and ICSI: for tubal factor, severe male factor or when simpler treatment has not worked (read about IVF).
- Surgery: laparoscopic treatment of cysts, fibroids, adhesions or endometriosis when they affect fertility.
- Fertility preservation: freezing of eggs, sperm or embryos.
