What is a high-risk pregnancy?
A pregnancy is called high risk when the mother, the baby or both have a higher chance of complications than usual. This does not mean something will go wrong; it means more careful monitoring and planning are needed. Many women with high-risk pregnancies deliver healthy babies with the right care.
Common reasons a pregnancy is high risk
- High blood pressure or pre-eclampsia
- Gestational or pre-existing diabetes
- Thyroid disease, anaemia or heart, kidney or lung conditions
- Twin or multiple pregnancy
- Previous caesarean, miscarriages, stillbirth or preterm birth
- Pregnancy after fertility treatment or IVF
- Age below 18 or above 35, or very low or high body weight
- Low-lying placenta, poor baby growth or low amniotic fluid
Warning signs: contact the hospital immediately if you have
- Vaginal bleeding or leaking of fluid
- Severe headache, blurred vision or sudden swelling of face and hands
- Severe abdominal pain or regular painful contractions before term
- Reduced or absent baby movements
- Fever, burning urination or persistent vomiting
How high-risk pregnancy is managed
Care is individualised and may include more frequent visits, blood pressure and blood sugar monitoring, additional blood tests, growth and Doppler scans, medicines and diet advice, and a plan for the timing and mode of delivery. Why hospital setting matters
Complicated pregnancies benefit from having obstetric, anaesthesia and newborn care available together. Sparsh is a mother and child hospital, so a pediatric and newborn team can assess the baby at birth, and newborn and NICU support is available in the same hospital where the situation requires it. See pregnancy, labour and delivery care and the obstetrics and maternity department.
Planning ahead
- Book your first antenatal visit early, ideally in the first trimester.
- Bring all reports and details of previous pregnancies.
- Take iron, folic acid and calcium as prescribed and attend every scan.
- Discuss your birth plan and hospital arrangements in advance.
