What is PCOS?
Polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS), often called PCOD in everyday language, is a hormonal condition affecting many women of reproductive age. It is linked to irregular ovulation, higher levels of male-type hormones and, in many women, insulin resistance. The ovaries may look polycystic on ultrasound, but the diagnosis depends on symptoms and tests together. PCOS is manageable, and many women with PCOS conceive.
Common symptoms
- Irregular, delayed or missed periods
- Acne, oily skin and excess facial or body hair
- Thinning hair on the scalp
- Weight gain, especially around the abdomen
- Darkening of skin folds at the neck or underarms
- Difficulty in conceiving
How PCOS is diagnosed
The doctor asks about your cycles and symptoms, examines you and advises blood tests such as thyroid, prolactin, hormone levels and blood sugar or insulin markers, along with a pelvic ultrasound. Other conditions that mimic PCOS are excluded first. See also PCOD symptoms and treatment.
Treatment is tailored to your goal
If you do not want pregnancy right now
Care focuses on regulating cycles, protecting the uterine lining, and managing acne, hair growth and weight, using lifestyle measures and suitable medicines.
If you want to conceive
Weight and metabolic health are addressed, and ovulation is induced with medicines and ultrasound monitoring. If this does not work, IUI or IVF may be considered. Read can PCOD affect fertility?
Lifestyle changes that make a real difference
- Regular exercise, at least 150 minutes a week where possible
- A balanced diet with whole grains, pulses, vegetables and less refined sugar
- Even a modest weight loss can restore ovulation in overweight women
- Good sleep and stress management
- Regular check-ups for blood sugar and cholesterol, because PCOS raises long-term risk
Where to get care
PCOS is treated in the gynaecology department for menstrual and hormonal concerns (menstrual and hormonal disorders) and by the fertility team when pregnancy is the goal. Dr. Deepa Seth sees women with PCOS and infertility.
