What is egg freezing?
Egg freezing (oocyte cryopreservation) is a way of preserving a woman's fertility. Eggs are collected after ovarian stimulation, frozen using a rapid cooling method called vitrification and stored so that they can be thawed and used in the future. It gives women more choice about when to have a child but does not guarantee a pregnancy later.
Who may consider egg freezing?
- Women who wish to delay pregnancy for education, career or personal reasons
- Women about to undergo chemotherapy, radiation or surgery that can affect the ovaries
- Women with conditions that may reduce ovarian reserve, such as endometriosis or a family history of early menopause
- Women who have a partner but wish to add a safety margin for the future
What is the best age for egg freezing?
Egg quality and numbers decline with age, so freezing at a younger age gives better chances. Doctors often advise considering it in the late twenties to early thirties, but each woman is different. A hormone test (AMH) and an ultrasound follicle count help estimate your ovarian reserve and how many eggs you may need to store. Read more in our guide to egg freezing: process, cost and best age.
The egg freezing process
- Consultation and tests: history, AMH, ultrasound and basic health checks.
- Ovarian stimulation: injections for about 10 to 12 days, with scans and blood tests.
- Egg retrieval: a short procedure under anaesthesia, usually as a day-care visit.
- Vitrification: mature eggs are frozen and stored in labelled storage.
- Later use: eggs are thawed, fertilised with sperm (usually ICSI) and embryos are transferred to the uterus.
Important things to understand
- Not every egg survives thawing or fertilises, so more eggs stored generally means better chances.
- More than one cycle may be needed to store enough eggs, especially at older ages.
- Stimulation has small risks, such as ovarian hyperstimulation, which your doctor will explain and monitor.
- Storage duration, consent and use are governed by clinical guidelines and law.
