You are not alone, and it is not your fault
Losing a pregnancy is painful, and losing more than one can feel overwhelming. Recurrent pregnancy loss is usually defined as two or more losses. Most couples who have had repeated miscarriages can still go on to have a healthy baby, and a careful evaluation often finds a treatable reason. It is not caused by everyday activities, lifting or stress in most cases.
Possible causes
- Chromosomal problems in the embryo, the most common cause overall
- Uterine factors: fibroids, polyps, adhesions or a septum
- Hormonal and metabolic conditions: thyroid disease, poorly controlled diabetes, PCOS, high prolactin
- Clotting or immune conditions such as antiphospholipid syndrome
- Parental chromosome rearrangements in a small number of couples
- Infections and lifestyle factors including smoking and obesity
In many couples, even after tests, no clear cause is found; this can still be managed with close monitoring and support.
Tests your doctor may advise
- Pelvic ultrasound and, when needed, imaging of the uterine cavity
- Thyroid, blood sugar and prolactin tests
- Blood tests for clotting and antiphospholipid antibodies
- Chromosome analysis (karyotype) of both partners in selected cases
- Tests of the products of conception after a miscarriage, when available
Treatment approach
Treatment follows the cause: thyroid or sugar control, surgical correction of uterine problems (often by keyhole surgery), blood-thinning medicines when a clotting condition is proven, and hormone support when advised. If chromosomal problems are suspected, IVF with genetic testing of embryos may be discussed; it is optional and chosen only after counselling. Treatment should be based on evidence rather than on routine medicines for everyone.
Care in the next pregnancy
Once you conceive, early scans, regular antenatal visits and monitoring of blood pressure, sugar and thyroid help. Sparsh has obstetric and newborn care in the same hospital; see high-risk pregnancy care.
Emotional support
Grief after miscarriage is real. Speak openly with your partner and your doctor, and ask for counselling if you feel low or anxious. Take time to heal before you decide when to try again.
Where to start
Book a consultation with Dr. Deepa Seth, infertility specialist and laparoscopic surgeon, and bring reports from earlier pregnancies and scans.
